Points of Interest

Weymouth Pavilion

Weymouth's Pavilion Theatre is just a short walk along the Esplanade from Oaklands and hosts a variety of musicals, dramas and comedy show all year round.

Jurassic Skyline

Enjoy 360° views of Weymouth, Portland and the surrounding area from 165 feet above the resort. Views extend for miles along the World Heritage "Jurassic Coast" to the East and tantalizing glimpses of Chesil Beach to the West. The huge scale of Portland Harbour becomes apparent and broad sweep of Weymouth seafront stretches out below.

Athelhampton House and Gardens

Described as one of the finest 15th-century country houses in England, Athelhampton near Dorchester almost became derelict in the 1800s before it was restored by Alfred Cart de Lafontaine. It was acquired by the Cooke family in 1957 and is still a family house. Thomas Hardy often visited Athelhampton (or "Athelhall" as he called it) and painted a watercolour of the house when he was 19. The formal gardens are dominated by twelve giant topiary pyramids which stand over 30 feet high.

Bennetts Water Gardens

Set in the disused clay pits of Chickerell Brickworks just a few minutes drive from our B&B on the outskirts of Weymouth, this eight-acre site has been landscaped to create a tranquil walk around numerous lakes with scenic places to sit and relax. Blooming at their best throughout the summer is one of the most outstanding displays of water lilies in Britain (150 varieties) surrounded by huge ponds and moisture loving plants, palms, native trees and wild flowers.

Jurassic Coast

The 95-mile stretch of coastline between Orcombe Point in East Devon and the Old Harry Rocks at Swanage in Dorset, was designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on 13th December 2001. This is England's first natural World Heritage Site, ranking it amongst such places as the Grand Canyon and Great Barrier Reef in environmental importance and one of the world's principal geological tourist attractions.

Local Points of Interest

Live Music

Weymouth also has a strong live music scene with tribute bands and local musicians playing regularly in many of the local pubs. Popular favourites include Finn's on Westham Road for rock music fans and the Duke of Edinburgh House of Sounds on St Thomas Street for everything from rock and roll through to the seventies.

Some of the best shore angling on the South Coast of England can be found around Weymouth, Portland, and the Chesil Beach. Off-shore, the "Shambles" sandbank is renowned for its catches of plaice, turbot and other species and all skippers will know of many shipwrecks where pollack, cod, ling and conger eels can be caught. Outside these areas, black bream are often caught in abundance. Go to Weymouth Angling Centre for the best advice.

Bird Watching

Radipole Lake nature reserve is located in the centre of Weymouth less than 10 minutes walk from our B&B and is considered to be one of the most important areas for migrating birds on the whole of the south coast of England. It was declared a bird sanctuary in 1929 and has been managed by the RSPB since 1976. It is also designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The reedbeds at Radipole Lake are now home to many rare birds, including Cetti's warblers, bearded tits, and bitterns.

There are plenty of places to eat in Weymouth and will suit all tastes and budgets. Our favourite is Al Molo (Italian Fine Dining) just a 5-minute walk from Oaklands with lovely views over the bay, A classy night out that won't break the bank. Look at our Facebook page likes so see our recommendations.

Plenty of clubs and late night bars in Weymouth ranging from Boombox (set over 2 floors with the best local DJ's) to The Closet which although billed as a gay bar play a good range of music and have a hilarious drag queen show at around 11:30 pm. Other places include the Rendevouz, TJ;s and The Lazy Lizard all in the main town.
